New Digital Trends for Retail in 2019
It is still January so it is still okay to write this outlook for 2019. It is amazing to see how fast things are shifting especially in Indonesia.
I can still remember the days without Gojek, Tokopedia, and OVO.
New technologies are popping up everywhere. The market is buzzing and everybody wants to launch the next big thing. The success stories of the ones above are inspiring for everyone and also shows it is possible.
So let’s see what we think that will be coming in the year 2019 in the Indonesian market.
Stores are going digital
Most of the warungs and small stores are already accepting GoPay or OVO and you see also Point of Sales solutions like Moka showing up more and more.
These store owners will start to see the upside of these systems and will become more data-driven.
They will use this data to sell new products and to improve their stock management.
Also, will they start communicating with their customers themselves using loyalty tools to increase the amount of returning customers.
Digital Stock Management to sell at more sales channels.
Gone are the days of excels or even notepads. Stores will merely become micro warehouses from where they fulfill their online sales.
Most stores, especially smaller boutiques, are selling a lot of their items online and they will bring this to the next level. Connecting their stock management to players like Tokopedia, Bukalapak, Lazada, and Shopee will speed up their sales and removes the bad experience of waiting for availability or even worse refunding orders because of no stock.
Stores start embracing new technologies in the store.
We see that more and more stores will start to use RFID chips to speed up the time at the cashier. This could result in two things :
- Installing self-checkout counters
- Speeding up the time at the cashier to only paying as the items are scanned by passing by.
Other things we think of are for example pre-ordering your coffee on the way to the office so you only have to pick up your coffee when you pass by the store. It will be ready and paid for when you arrived. This will remove those annoying waiting lines when you are so in need for your first cup of coffee of the day.
You will probably also going to notice a lot more QR Codes when you are shopping. These will give you info on where your product is from and how its journey was to the time you picked it up. It will also enable you to add it to your virtual shopping card so you do not have to take it home yourself, it will be delivered to your door in the time you are still spending at the mall doing more shopping or watching a movie.
Vending machines will start to pop-up in Indonesia
Digital payment systems opened the door for an older business as vending machines. We did not see a lot of those in the past but now with e-money taking a flight operating them became more interesting.
If you ever been to Japan or China, you will be more familiar with the possibilities of vending machines. But don’t be surprised if you will be able to pick up your breakfast and coffee on your way up to the office.
More things will come
This is only the tip of the iceberg in my opinion and I am sure there will be another post in the future of other stuff that are coming. One thing is sure, it is going to be a fun year if you like to see digital business cases in the wild. Because it is time to push the limit in Indonesia with technology.
